Mayweather Shouts Racism in Boxing Coverage
Boxing is a great sport where boxers from all over the world can contend with one another to be the best. HBO Boxing analysts however, taint the sport by mixing their job with hints of racial prejudice.
Or at least that’s what retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. thinks.
Mr. Mayweather may have been a great champion and all, having suffered not a single defeat in his entire career, and he is entitled to speak his own mind. However, in defense of the commentators, has there been any black fighter who has risen to prominence recently? The answer is a resounding yes. For the past two decades, the boxing world has seen and praised a number of powerful black fighters: Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, and Mayweather included. Where’s the racism in that?
But if there is anyone with any hint of racism, it is Mayweather himself. When asked what he thought of Manny Pacquiao replacing him as the world’s new pound-for-pound champion, he dismisses the Filipino lightweight champion as a bum who is way far behind him. Pacquiao is an adept fighter who has fought his way to earn his keep. He really deserves much praise for his feats. If he thinks Pacquiao is a bum, why not Mayweather challenge the bum in a fair fight and see who wins? Until then, Mayweather needs to keep his mouth shut, unless he wants hate mails flooding his mailbox.
